Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church.

We belong to the Reformed Church in America.  It is a Protestant denomination very similar to the Presbyterian Church in theology and practice.  Whereas the Presbyterians originated from Scotland, our denomination originated from the Netherlands.

The Reformed Church in America governs formally by local groupings of churches called Classes.  We belong to the Delaware-Raritan Classis.  Voting members of the Classis are made up of the Ministers and Elder Delegates of its churches.

Our congregation is overseen by a governing board called the consistory.  The governing board and the Minister, though working together for the building up of Griggstown Reformed Church, are amenable to the Delaware-Raritan Classis in different ways.  The consistory is made up of ordained leaders called Elders and Deacons.  Elders tend to the spiritual needs of the church while Deacons tend to the physical needs of the church and its community.

The Reformed Church in America administrates loosely by areas called Regional Synods.  These Regional Synods serve several Classes.  We are in the Regional Synod of the Mid-Atlantics

Here is our current consistory:

Minister - administers God's Word and Sacraments

Rev. David Leung Kahler was ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament in 2000 and served as an Associate Pastor in a church in Colorado before serving at Griggstown Reformed Church since 2003.  Pastor Dave is a chaplain for the Griggstown Volunteer Fire Co. and Boy Scout Troop 888.  He enjoys playing guitar, running, lifting weights, skiing, and making videos.  He and his wife Pauline are pleasantly busy raising their toddler daughter and son.

Elders - tend to the spiritual needs of the church

Kay Batt, our Consistory Vice-President, was ordained an Elder in January 2007 and will finish her term next year.  She and her husband are both recently retired, enjoying traveling, and their new grandson.

Lottie Frein was ordained in January 2007 and will finish her term next year.  She and her husband enjoy visiting family and going on outings together.

Margaret Smith was ordained an Elder a while back, and her current term is from 2007-2008.  Margaret is also our Sunday School Superintendent.

Lloyd Staats (not pictured) was ordained an Elder a while back, and his current term is from 2007-2008.  He and his wife June enjoy visiting their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren all over the United States.

Deacons - tend to the physical needs of the church and community

Cathy Heuschkel was ordained a Deacon in 2007 and will finish up her term next year.  Cathy enjoys retirement, and she and her husband are looking forward to many fun filled days with their new grandchild.

Kevin Grennen was ordained a Deacon in 2006 and will finish up his term this year.  He and his wife Debbie raise their 4 children and find time to run their landscaping business.  Kevin is the Scoutmaster of Troop 100, and both he and his wife are very active in other aspects of Scouting.

Frank Whittlesey was ordained a Deacon in 2007 and will finish up his term next year.  Frank is a lawyer, and he and his wife are raising their two daughters and taking care of a house full of animals.

Karen Powell was ordained a Deacon this year and will finish up in 2008.  Karen and her husband raise their daughter.  She also works a part-time job as a dog sitter.
